Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. - Psalm 62:1

This Sunday we are cancelling our in-person Worship Services and posting a recorded service online. Why? Because we need to rest – we all do, so we are taking a day of rest as a church. (The service will be on Facebook as normal except recorded instead of live – so watch it when you want.)

Okay, that’s not the only reason. Covid has hit our staff, tech team and other volunteers pretty hard with multiple people either sick, testing positive or quarantining. It would be very difficult to actually have a service with the number of people out – including me. I am in quarantine now. I imagine many of you are dealing with something similar.

Next, the weather is supposed to be bad on Sunday morning. There’s a big storm coming, and there is a good possibility that the roads will be bad. (Of course they could be wrong on this, but from when I am writing this on Thursday, it’s only looking like it’s getting worse). It’s important to keep everyone safe. So, stay at home and don’t go out if you can help it, but be careful if you do. Stay at home, keep warm and be safe.

But a big part of this is it’s okay to take a day to rest. Everyone needs to rest. Now, it is against my nature, values and personality to cancel anything. I have always thought if it’s possible than go ahead. But maybe I am wrong on this. Maybe I need to rest as well. Maybe God wants us to rest. We certainly need to. It’s okay to take a day of rest.

God has commanded us to take a day of rest. It’s one of the 10 Commandments. He modeled a day of rest for us as part of the creation. The Day of Rest was created for us.

For many of us, resting does not come easy. It’s something we have to learn. (For some resting is easy and working is hard, but that is a topic for another day.) Our souls need rest. Our souls crave rest. We feed our souls the junk food of stress, and then can’t figure out why our souls are so tired. God wants to give rest to our souls.

So, this Sunday, take a day of rest. Watch the service online – I will be teaching on Rest. Worship God, just you and Him. Spend time with Him Pray. Be quiet. Listen. Take a nap if you can. Stay indoors. Do something you enjoy. But above all – rest.
