He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Matthew 9:37, 38
Jesus saw the world as a field ready for harvest, a place of possibility, a place filled with people from one corner to the other in need of salvation, people He loved enough to come into the world as one of us to die for us.
One day, Jesus was with His disciples, and I imagine they were walking along a path next to a field filled with wheat, a field that was ready for the harvesters to come. I think He motioned toward it and drew their attention to it. Then He said, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” (Matthew 9:37, 38) That stuck in their heads, enough that years later, Matthew wrote down what He remembered Jesus saying. The image of that field was still fresh in his mind. Matthew knew that this was just an illustration; He was not referring to crops but to people. There are people out there who need salvation. There are people out there who need Jesus.
Interesting enough, Jesus did not tell them to go out right then and do the work themselves. He told them to pray first, to pray for additional workers to go out. He wanted them to start with prayer. Jesus wanted them to believe in prayer. He wanted them to be in prayer. There is power in prayer. There is power in prayer because there is power in the One who answers our prayers. Prayer is where real work happens.
Jesus still calls us to pray for more workers into the field. He still wants us to see the world as a field filled with harvest. He still wants more workers to go out into the world. He still desires people to be saved.
October 5-10, we will be hosting the Global Prayer to Reach the World Event to pray for people to come to Christ and for all workers here at Bridges and all over the world to go out from wherever they are to wherever they need to be to reach people wherever they are, people who need Christ.
We will be in prayer just as Jesus directed, seeking Him and interceding for others. The call to prayer is not an easy one, but a necessary one. It shows we understand that this is not something we do on our own. We need God to work. He can do things we cannot.
Jesus calls us to pray.
Join us as we come together to pray at the church – Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Worship Auditorium and Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall from 6:30-7:30pm for a time of prayer.
You don’t have to feel like you are great at prayer. The simplest prayer is better than the most complex plan. The key is to pray from your heart, to pray that God will work through us, our missions partners and missionaries all over the world to bring the Gospel to every corner of the earth. Anyone can pray.
It is so encouraging to pray together; it is life-giving. It is a way to be part of what God is doing! If the times don’t work for you, pray where you are when you are able. The main thing is to pray and trust God to work.
One day, we may look back at this as the time God changed everything! And it all starts with prayer.
