Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them!
For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.
- Jesus. Matthew 19:14
I still remember that little church in Crab Point, a neighborhood not far from my house. My good, best friend, Gray Weeks, invited me to come to Vacation Bible School with him. We were probably in kindergarten or first grade at the time. The details are a little fuzzy, but I do remember a room, doing crafts and feeling like I belonged even though Gray was the only one I knew going in. It is part of my spiritual journey; a part of God drawing me to Himself like so many other people have experienced over their lives. I was just a little kid, but it made a big impact on my life.
It often starts with children, when they are little and open to God and the things of God, before they have built up barriers and become more hardened. Children seem to get Jesus; they understand Him better than adults. They can sense His goodness and His openness to them. They get that He is for them. They believe with a purity and innocence of their own. They believe in Him and believe Him period. Their prayers are so heartfelt; there is a lot we can learn from them.
That is why we are having VBS at Bridges next week; it is a chance to help children find and follow Jesus with the hope that it will last a lifetime and beyond. It will be a “all hands-on deck” week as there are almost 40 kids signed up with the hope of even more. There is a lot of work involved, but some things are worth it. Children are worth it.
There is still time to invite children and families to come. It might be your grandkids, or your child’s teammates or playmates, your neighbor’s family, anyone within your family’s circle of influence. Pray and then invite. Don’t assume; just listen for the promptings of the Spirit and follow them. You never know what He might do.
This is a great opportunity to really impact a life. My life was impacted because my friend Gray invited me to come to VBS. Imagine what might happen if God could use you to do the same for someone else.
Let’s be praying for God to do something extraordinary next week through VBS. Let’s believe God for more!
