My wife and I have been reading through the Bible together this year, and for the past several weeks we've been spending time in the Psalms. As we've read, I've been continually reminded of what worship looks like.
At its core, a form of worship is simply bringing our hearts before God. The psalmists didn't hide their emotions or try to clean themselves up before approaching the Lord. They were honest. They expressed their praise, gratitude, fears, frustrations, doubts, sorrows, and hopes. Whatever they were experiencing, they brought it to God.
One of the things I love about the Psalms is how relatable they are. Though they were written thousands of years ago, the struggles and emotions they describe are still familiar to us today. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, "there is nothing new under the sun."
Throughout the Psalms, we see recurring themes that reflect many of the seasons of life we experience:
These are just a few examples of how the psalmists poured out their hearts before the Lord. Whether they were celebrating God's faithfulness or crying out in distress, they knew where to turn.
I want to encourage you to do the same.
Whatever season you find yourself in: joyful, difficult, or in between… Go to God. Go to His Word. There seems to be a Psalm for almost every circumstance and emotion. In its pages you can find encouragement, comfort, wisdom, conviction, and hope.
As you experience life's highs and lows, remember that the Lord remains the same. He is our refuge and strength, our fortress, our comforter, and our salvation.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His mercy endures forever.” - Psalm 107:1
